Product Details

This handwoven hand embroidered pashmina shawl is part of a 'Classic Revival Series', created to emulate the design and feel of traditional hand-crafted shawls. The 'Jaansheen' shawl design and theme are based on the traditional almond design of Kashmir, Jaansheen means more precious than life, Jaansheen is also used as a word for lover. The colours are inspired by the shades of life of Radha Rani and Lord Krishna on the green planet, they are considered 'as one' and never separable. The embroidery depicts small flowers and almonds all hand worked with a needle on soft cashmere from Ladakh.

The raw cashmere fibres for this shawl were sourced from Tsokar Village near to the famous Tsokar Lake, from herds owned by Mr Tsering Phunsok. Temperatures here can reach minus 35 degrees during the Winter, the goats grow a fine long-haired undercoat that forms a natural heat-insulating shield against the cold. This fiber is light and warm with amazing insulating properties, the fibers are extremely fine varying between 9 - 16 microns.

Dehairing is the process of removing the thick guard hair from the pashmina fibres which is then carded ready for spinning. Ladakh was given a 'State of the Art' six-stage carding machine by the Government to help to protect the interests of Ladakh pashmina growers, and is one of the best working carding machines in India.

Spinning is a traditional culture in Kashmir and is still found in the homes of skilled artisans in Kashmir. The soft carded fibres are spun into fine yarns ranging in thickness from 110 - 140 English count, this quality of yarn would be difficult to achieve on modern machinery without a carrier fibre for strength to stop the cashmere fibres from breaking. The cashmere for this shawl was spun by Mrs Nusrat Fatima. The fine yarn was then woven on a handloom into the soft fabric used to make the 'Jaansheen Shawl' by Mr Javed Ahmed Dar in Hawal Mohalla, Srinagar.

The intricate embroidery was crafted by Mohd. Yasin in the Ganderbal District in Kashmir.

The shawl was finished at the 'finishing plant' in Hawal by Mr Zakir Wani in December 2022, where the fabric was carefully washed and finished ready for dispatch.

The shawl will be supplied with a book entitled 'The Kashmir Shawl', which will create a backdrop for you of the 'landscape and lives' where these shawls are created.
